Johnathan Dickenson State Park, Southern Florida (near Stuart, FL)
Johnathan Dickenson State Park is located in Southern Florida and is a fantastic spot for family vacations. As a kid growing up in Miami, I belonged to a social group called Indian Princesses which was a father daughter club. Every year our group of fathers and daughters would go camping at Johnathan Dickenson.
While there we would go for nature hikes, led by a campground Ranger, to learn about the local wildlife and local vegetation. There are four hiking trails to choose from. The Kitching Creek trail, the Hobe Mountain trail, and the Sand Pine Scrub Nature trail which leads into the Florida trail.
We also took canoe trips along the Loxahatchee River and played at the beach when we canoed to our destination. During our canoe trips we got to see ducks, turtles, a few otters, and of course, plenty of alligators.
Johnathan Dickenson also has horseback riding for those campers who have their own horses. They have eight miles worth of horse trails.
When we spent time at camp, we'd sit beside our camp fire and enjoy the shade of the cypress trees. There are plenty of opportunities not far from camp to either go near the water or take a walk through the trees.
Fishing is also allowed at the Johnathan Dickenson State Park. Kitching Creek is a good place to snag some snapper and largemouth bass. There are also several other ponds and lakes throughout the park.
So if you're looking to get away for a weekend with the family, or your have social group of friends, like I had, then Johnathan Dickenson is a lovely choice for South Floridians.
