Best Campgrounds In New York

Lake George NY has been blessed with many beautiful islands throughout its pristine waters. Many have docks for boaters to pull up and enjoy either a picnic or up to a two weeks stay at a tent site on the island.
My favorite island to camp on in Lake George is Long Island. It is situated about five miles north of Lake George Village and is easily accessible by boat.
As the name suggests, it is a long island, (about a mile)fairly narrow although there is plenty of room for campers on both sides of the island and enough space between so you barely will know they are there, and good dock sites to get in and out of the water.
If one has young children it is a good idea to bring along a fishing pole or two and some worms as the Sunnies make for an easy fun catch. There are nice fireplaces with a hinged grate attached so you can rest a pot or two to cook on.
One may get lucky and find oneself with some leftover firewood from the previous camper. The one nice thing about the campsites on all of Lake George's islands is the tent platforms. They provide for a nice level place to pitch a tent that is off the ground so your tent floor should not get soaked if it rains.
So bring some nails and a hammer to secure the corners of your tent to the platform. If one happens to choose a site on the east side of the island, one may be blessed with a beautiful sunrise to start your day on the lake.
If one chooses a site on the west side of the island, one may get a later mornings sleep and be blessed with a stunning Adirondack sunset.
My personal favorite site has been always dock number thirty-six. The site is nice and flat and grassy and close to the trail that runs north south through the middle of the island. It makes a fun hike for the kids.
