You haven't truly lived until you've camped at Silver Lake. One of Vermont's State Parks, Silver Lake is a way for you to get away from the world and be one with nature. I live in Vermont, but the drive to Barnard is still about an hour and a half.
Every year one of my close friends and I reunite and drive down to Barnard. You have to pack light, because after you park, it's about a mile hike until you reach the campground. But boy is it worth it! Silver Lake is pristine and gorgeous.
We always swim across the lake and sun bathe on the other side. What I love is that when you are in the middle of the lake, you can see where it ends in every direction. It's still very large, but not so vast that you feel alone.
I think its true camping, because there are no hook ups of any kind, and no bathrooms (besides an out house). It's a very friendly place, and Ranger Bob who has been working there for years is full of information.
One thing that is always fun to do is to go to the cleared section of the forest and go wood picking. They have a lot of great wood for great fires. It's probably the most beautiful place I have ever been and I can't wait for our snowy winter to finally be over so I can go back!
Vermont has a lot of great campgrounds, but this is one of the best well-kept secrets. Not too many people camp there, and its amazing how close to nature you feel and how peaceful your soul is when you camp at Silver Lake.
